Australia will not attend ASEAN counter-terrorism working group meeting co-hosted by Myanmar and Russia in August
On June 23, Australia's Ministry of Defence said it would not attend the ASEAN Counter-Terrorism Working Group meeting, which will be jointly held by Myanmar and Russia in Moscow from August 20 to 21.
The ASEAN Counter-Terrorism Working Group includes Australia, the United States, Japan, China, New Zealand, India and South Korea in addition to the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Continued regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism is important. Australia has never missed a meeting of the ASEAN Counter-Terrorism Working Group in the past 11 years.
In 2021, Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton attended at least two online ASEAN counter-terrorism expert meetings, the same year he was widely criticized for acknowledging the overthrow of Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government of Myanmar's military regime in February.
The Australian government has opposed Mr Dutton's participation in meetings of officials lower than the defence minister. But Australia has not imposed new sanctions on the Myanmar army, which has carried out a deadly crackdown on people opposed to the military coup after the military coup.
Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Malles also said that the new Australian government will not send any representatives to the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting to be held on August 20-21 and the ASEAN counter-terrorism work jointly held by Myanmar and Russia in Moscow.
