UN concerned about Aung San Suu Kyi's transfer to prison
UN human rights activists have criticized the Myanmar military regime for transferring detained Aung San Suu Kyi to prison.
On June 23, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at a news conference in New York that he was very concerned about the matter, which is a practice targeting the president and other political prisoners.
International human rights groups have criticized the move as an attempt to intimidate political opponents, including Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters. Phil Robertson, deputy director of the international human rights group, said the move could escalate more violent opposition.
Aung San Suu Kyi, who turns 77 this month, has been detained since the Burmese army coup on February 1 last year, and more than a dozen cases have been filed.
