Indian foreign minister explained India's relationship with Myanmar's military regime

Comprehensive news, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who arrived in Bangkok, Thailand on August 16 to attend the 9th India-Thailand Joint Committee meeting, explained the relationship between India and the Myanmar military regime on August 18.

Jaishankar said at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok that New Delhi's stance on Myanmar has been consistent for decades, dating back to Myanmar's struggle for freedom and against colonialism. "Our relationship should not be judged by the politics of the time". As a direct neighbor, India cannot avoid dealing with the Myanmar military regime because of border issues, such as prevention of organized crime, defense against the new crown epidemic and Indian opposition forces in Myanmar. "We also have to manage our border relationships and the complexities of being neighbors."

Earlier this year, India's new ambassador to Myanmar also presented his credentials to Burma's coup leader Min Aung Hlaing, making India one of the few countries to recognize the military regime as the legitimate government.

Jaishankar said that as a close neighbor, India's understanding of Myanmar's democracy is different from other distant countries. He said that despite his contacts with the Burmese military regime, he was convinced that as a democratic country, it was in the best interests of Burma to reflect the emotions and aspirations of the Burmese people.
